Enhancing Realism with Displacement Materials in Marmoset Toolbag 5

I recently had the pleasure of creating a comprehensive guide on displacement in Toolbag 5 for the amazing team at Marmoset. Dive into the full guide here:

Among several scenes I created for the guide was this boulder, scanned a few years back. Using tri-planar material layers, each with its own displacement effect, I was able to breathe new life into this dramatic piece of the Irish coastal landscape. I generated masks from the original scanned albedo map, including grass, lichen, light and dark stone, and used them to mask off different material layers pulled from the Toolbag library. This helped to enhance areas where detail was blurry or missed altogether, or where UVs were skewed, by integrating nuanced displacement layers. This technique proved incredibly effective, and I'm looking forward to trying it in other scenes.
Foliage is from the excellent Graswald library.

This is composed of the same rock scaled and rotated a few times. One instance has a tri-planar dead grass material applied from the Toolbag library. The foliage is from the Graswald plant library

I added standing water at one stage. I really like how the Toolbag water shaders handle depth and refraction

Autumn feels. I was listening to Lankum extensively while working on this project

A summers evening. I should have animated more of the grass moving in the wind, but it is what it is
